Thiruvananthapuram: An ayurvedic hospital in Kerala says it will soon offer packages for treatment of what it calls new-age ailments.

Somatheeram Ayurvedic Hospital and Beach Resort near Kovalam, overlooking the Arabian Sea, will start offering treatment for ailments like fibromyalgia and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) from February.

Somatheeram chief Poly Mathew said Monday: "The hospital has been promoting ayurveda treatments among foreign tourists from the late 1990."

C.S. Vinod, tourism consultant to Somatheeram, who is based in Germany, said: "The hospital has been working on these exclusive packages for the past four years. These packages will be of three or four week duration.

"The three-week package will cost 2,500 euros, while the four-week will cost 3,800 euros."

Fibromyalgia is a syndrome mostly prevalent in cold countries and causes fatigue, sleeplessness and nervous breakdowns. The syndrome is a widespread musculoskeletal pain for which the cause is still unknown.

Raji Pradeep, who will oversee the new treatment, said: "In our general ayurvedic packages, we treat ailments like sleeplessness and nervous breakdown, but this package will use specially prepared ayurvedic oils to help people suffering from Fibromyalgia."

Another new package for anti-ageing regeneration programme will be launched simultaneously.

CTS is a common source of hand numbness and pain and occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist.

To tackle CTS, the hospital will use special medicated oils (dhara).
